'A Name'

A name can be such a simple thing

I mean everyone has one 

And yet it can say so much, yet so little about you 

It's a gift given to you 

That some love and others resent 

It's a decision made in a fleeting moment of time by others 

That will impact you in some form for the rest of your life 

Some will say Tom, John, Ben, Emma, Sophie and Jessica are basic Others will say they are classic 

Some can be shortened, others can be lengthened 

They can be your biggest downfall or your greatest strength 

A name can be such a simple thing 

But without one what are you? 

A name can remind you of someone that you know 

It can remind others of people who came before you 

A name can be such a simple thing 

But who decides what they should call you?

A name can be known by many or be known by few 

A name can have meaning no matter how stringent the link 

A name can be such a simple thing 

But it is the first thing anyone learns about you 

A name can be changed and maimed 

A name can be such a simple thing 

And yet is not
